I am researching new computer vision techniques to help map the brain. This field is called connectomics. It is at the intersection of biology, neuroscience, engineering, computer science, and math. We are working to discover the circuits in the brain, which we hope will lead to advances in technology and medicine.
My role is to teach computers to "see." We have a huge amount of very high-resolution data, such as the example at right. In this data, you can see everything - neurons, synapses, and even vesicles containing neurotransmitters. This example is courtesy of the Lichtman Lab at Harvard.
